I-N's headquarters, a charming grey building located at 326 Central Ave SE in Minneapolis, has been the site of more than our day-to-day operations and meetings - in fact, thirty years ago this building had a whole other life. Formerly "Jim's Coffee Shop and Bakery," this historical landmark has been in the press for years, dating back to 1992, when this was the central site of the filming of the blockbuster movie 'Untamed Heart,' starring Christian Slater, Marisa Tomei and Rosie Perez. The movie helped to put Minneapolis on the map nationally, and drew attention to all that this city has to offer.
Following the unlikely romance between Tomei's character, Caroline, who works as a waitress at Jim's Coffee Shop and Bakery, and Slater's character, a busboy named Adam, the movie chronicles a classic 90's love story. Local actor, Joe Minijares, played the fictional owner of the coffee shop. Originally, the film was supposed to be filmed in New Jersey, but a change in direction came when award-winning director, Tony Bill, reportedly, "fell in love with Jim's during a scouting trip to Minnesota," (FOX 9) and decided to move the filming to Minneapolis. With this location change came a flurry of press and crew to the corner of 4th and Central in Northeast Minneapolis, an unusual happening that took many local business owners by surprise. One of which was Aveda founder, Horst Rechelbacher, father of I-N co-founder Nicole Rechelbacher, who owned the parking lot behind Jim's and the famed Aveda Institute across the street. Special accommodations were made providing the film crew with access to the lot - "everyone who came to Horst got valet parking for two or three weeks while we were shooting," (FOX 9) said the location manager for Untamed Heart, Robert Graf.
Sold to Horst in 1997 after Jim's Coffee Shop and Bakery closed its doors, 326 Central Ave SE has been home to Intelligent Nutrients and our signature essential oil aromas ever since. What remains today is the original Jim's billboard, an artifact of the legacy that lives on here, and one that every I-N employee is reminded of as they pass by on their way into work each day. "Northeast has such a cool vibe and driving into work and seeing that sign brings me back to a simpler time when Christian Slater was the king and Marisa Tomei was his queen.
